River of Life Church-Cambodia (RLCC) began as one small local fellowship. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, the ministry has since expanded to more than 140 churches spread throughout the country. Partners International works with RLCC, the nation’s largest indigenous church network, with the goal of planting churches in all of the nation’s 24 provinces. In 2006, RLCC reached its goal of planting one church in every province. Now, we are assisting RLCC to train believers for ministry, resource church planters, plant daughter churches, and bring sustainable community development programs to rural villages.

The holocaust perpetrated by the Communist Khmer Rouge in the 1970s cost the lives of nearly two million Cambodian people. After the horrors of the killing fields, just two trained pastors remained to minister among the small number of surviving, underground Christians. The tiny Cambodian Church suffered in isolation until 1990 when the government finally legalized Christianity. At the time, there were just 20 known churches in the entire country.

Though 85% of Cambodians identify as Buddhist, many recognize that Buddha did not save them from the violence of the war, and thousands of Cambodia’s 14 million people have opened their hearts to Jesus. Today, evidence of God’s Spirit abounds–those 20 churches have grown to 6,000! Though hampered by anti-evangelism laws and restrictions on church registration, Cambodian Christian leaders have a deep compassion for the poor and are eager to see God’s Kingdom established and multiplied across the country.
