Established in 1991, Sundanese Christian Fellowship (SCF) focuses on church planting among the Sundanese Muslims of Indonesia. In SCF’s first few years, only one or two Sundanese could be won to the Savior. Partners International began investing in SCF’s outreach and training projects in 1997. Today, more than 80 Sundanese house churches have been planted. SCF is viewed by other national ministries as a pioneer in the area of Muslim church planting. Indonesia is the world’s fourth largest country with more than 254 million people. It is also one of the most diverse with more than 750 distinct people groups. Sadly, 130 of these groups are highly unreached with few, if any, Christians. One of the largest of these unreached groups is the 35 million Sundanese. Though 94% of Sundanese identify themselves as Muslim, many live in superstition and fear that is rooted in ancient animistic beliefs. Only about 250 Sundanese house churches exist in the whole country, and most of them are quite small and located in urban areas.

One of the major challenges in reaching Indonesia’s Muslims is not theological, but sociological. Many Sundanese seekers fear they will have to abandon their treasured cultural traditions and family bonds in order to follow Christ. To reach just one percent of the Sundanese people, at least 30,000 house churches must be planted. To have any hope of reaching the Sundanese, the bulk of the church-planting movement must be carried out by Sundanese believers. Although there has been an upsurge in Muslim fundamentalism, the time is ripe to reach the Sundanese with the Gospel.
