Mekong Southeast Asia
Most of the organizations we partner with in the Mekong area are relatively young, and most Christian leaders have not had many opportunities for training. However, they are committed and courageous servants with a deep compassion for the poor. Partners International is supporting a number of ministries who are planting churches, transforming villages through community development, and building up the core of the Church—its leaders.

Connected by the Mekong River, the five countries of Mekong Southeast Asia are Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. Plagued by war, natural disasters, and deep poverty, the majority of the people of this region follow Buddhism mixed with a blend of animistic beliefs. Though Christianity is growing in the region, today only a tiny percent of the region’s more than 235 million people are Christians, and four of the five nations in this region have been home to some of the harshest treatment of Christians in recent decades. These repressive governments have also enacted laws restricting house churches, a serious constraint since the majority of churches meet in homes. Yet, with memories of war fading and the loosening up of some historically repressive forms of government, many of the people in the region are open to the Gospel like never before.
