The Country where Alatoo works is a former Soviet republic located in the heart of Central Asia. After gaining independence in the 1990s, this was considered to be the most democratic country in the region. However, over the last several years, it has gone through two “revolutions” as well as severe ethnic conflict sparked by unemployment and poverty. These events brought the nation to the point of economic and social collapse.
The religious situation has also been shifting. The government approved a new law which complicates the process of officially registering churches and limits the rights of believers. In this anti-Christian environment, the influence of Islam and its extremist groups is growing.
