Saving Money and Saved by the Lord

Joshua Vision India’s (JVI) vision is to equip churches and mission agencies to reach the 4,000 Unreached People Groups of India and to develop the poor. In JVI’s training for women called Indian Women in Lord’s Labor (IWILL), two programs are conducted. One is the two-year Master Trainers’ Orientation that equips graduate-level women missionaries to reach the Unreached People Groups and to train them in income-generating technologies. The other shorter one is Holistic Development Training which basically equips grassroots-level women leaders to minister to the unreached people groups and to train them in income generating technologies.

Sheela* is one such lady with an inspiring story. She comes from one of the backward states of India. Sheela was trained as a Holistic Development Trainee at IWILL. Her daughter had been trained at IWILL as a Master Trainer.

Besides learning how to share the Gospel and income-generating technologies, Sheela learned about a program called WEDGES (Women Empowerment and Development Group Enterprises).

She encouraged the women and started about 30 WEDGEs with each group of 10-15 women. She taught the women that though they are poor, they can save money! Now the women are saving about 50 rupees (70 cents) per month. One of the women says she feels more confident now that she went through this program. “I am now able to save money for my family and me,” she said. “The groups are also a great help for me to share my struggles and joy.”

The groups took a loan from the bank so they could start a small business. They are now manufacturing and supplying nutritious food for government daycare centers. Recently they took another loan from the bank to purchase a paper plate making the machine. Some of the elected members of the group are running the paper plate machine.

Thus far, Sheela has shared the Gospel with 90 people (87 women and 3 men). Of this number, 27 people requested her to pray for them and 12 people accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior.

Prayer Concerns:

  • Pray for Sheela and her team members, that they would continue to serve the Lord.
  • Pray for their income generation activity. They are planning to buy another paper plate making machine.
  • Pray for the new believers, that they may be discipled and in turn, witness in their people groups.
  • Pray for the people who heard the Gospel but did not accept the Lord. Pray for the Holy Spirit to touch their hearts.
