Dariya Development teaches Adult Literacy classes in many Pakistani villages. Our village centers double for literacy training and sewing training. Students not only get an education but also learn about good health, and moral and social issues.
A few of the practical lessons we use to teach literacy:
- Role of husband and wife
- Balanced Diet
- Wise and foolish builder
- Desperation and encouragement
- Community hygiene (germs, flies and diseases)
Stories from two villagers—an adult woman and a teenager
My name is Sunaina*. My husband is a rickshaw driver. We have a son and a daughter. I am also a sewing center teacher, and a student of adult literacy classes. I joined an adult literacy course before, but it was closed. I joined this class two months ago.
I didn’t get the chance to attend school in my childhood. I like to read, write and study, but I’m not good at any of them. I try to write with my daughter, but it’s difficult. Sometimes my children ask me to help them in their studies but I feel bad because I cannot help them. Now, after two months of my adult literacy course, I can read some words. I wish to read the Holy Bible.
I like to sing educational songs with my children. They sing with me when we have time. I’m also learning many health and moral lessons in the adult literacy center. I am very thankful to Dariya Development for the literacy classes.
I have never gone to school at all but it’s my fault. When I was young, my mother continuously asked me to go to school and learn, but for some reason, I always refused. Now, I am 16 years old and realize that a person is nothing without education. I took admission in the adult literacy center. My mother is encouraging me and sends me regularly to the Center. Now I am satisfied to be a part of this class. I attend the class regularly. I like to learn moral and other lessons and songs. I am very thankful to my mother and also to Dariya Development.
